Why did he do all this THEN tell me he loved me?

This guy, a friend, well everytime we are in a group, he talks and looks at everyone but me. If I say something, he may answer but never looks at me. On a one to one, he looks away if I speak to him, if I get dressed up he will say hello but look in the opposite direction so pointedly it is almost like I am an ogre ( and I know I 'm not cause other men say I look well). He also does this thing of turning his back on me...say we meet each other in a corridor in work and say hello, even if we are walking in the same direction, he will straighten up and walk ahead of me, turning his back and answering me over his shoulder. He is like this with no one else, is confident and flirty with others BUT he came along one day and told me he loved me? Now I am really confused, why did he behave this way if he had feelings for me?
