Is it possible for two attractive people of the opposite , or indeed of the same , to be just friends?

I'm not talking about someone you've known for ages or someone you've grow up with, more like a newly made friend. Is there always going to be an underlying desire thing going on or is it possible to have a purely platonic friendship?
