How do I polish shoes with white stitching?

I have several pairs of dark brown shoes with white stitching. I love the look, but I'm scared to polish the shoes! I asked a shoe repair guy and he said to just carefully avoid the stitching, something that I opine would take the skill of a surgeon. There's got to be a Martha Stewart type remedy! ;-)
