From trendy music to gay rights, are churches primarily following Christ or trying to be hip and cool?

It seems like evangelicals think they're cool because they have polished bands and lots of programs for the religious consumers/shoppers, while the Episcopalians and other mainliners are bragging about how cool they are because they are gay-affirming. Doesn't it all boil down to appeasement for religious conservatives and religious liberals alike? It seems like the Gospel is commodified and lost in it all.
